Greatest American Dog - Week 8 Courage
I liked the elephant challenge. I was very impressed by Andrew. I didn’t think Presley would stick it out in the first round. Winner Andrew & Lori.
This week’s task: Stunt Dog. The leg up earned by Lori and Andrew did not help this week. I’m not sure I would want to train my dog to jump off of a tall tower or out of a window. Fear is nature’s way of keeping us safe. I was surprised to see three of the five dogs actually do it.
Best in Show: JD & Galaxy
Now it gets really tough. More than half of the group is in the worst category. The three worst performers were Travis & Presley; Lori & Andrew; and Bill & Star. The judges decision to send Bill & Star home I’m sure will disappoint the fans of the show. According to our poll 44% of our readers thought Bill & Star would win it all. Bill & Star also had the fewest votes for who will go home in week 8. It will be interesting to see what happens next week but without Bill & Star it will be less interesting.
No real excitement this week. I’m a bit disappointed that Bill & Star are gone but I’m not sure who the judges should have sent home.
TR

To Bill & Star
I’m 5 and I am really going to miss you, I wish you were still on the show. I love you.
William in Kansas city
I think this weeks show was totally of the wall and outlandish, not to speak of not safe! Elephants are untrustworthy and if it had not stopped could have killed one of those dogs! The jump actually hurt a dog that now may have to leave the show. Dogs are animals and there is still a measure of self preservation, I was surprised any of them jumped. I was very surprised that the show did so many things to put the dogs in danger. I loved watching Greatest American Dog until this week. Whoever put the stunts together should be ashamed of themselves. The judges got into Bill for being to hard on his dog one week, but yet, what did they do????
3 words: Goddamn the judges.
I’m extremely disappointed that Bill and Star got sent home this week. I think that Bill made the right decision and didn’t push Star just so he could win. She’s old and she could have injured herself worse then Galaxy did. I think the judges made a big mistake sending them home. I believe that JD and Galaxy should have been sent home due to her injury. I think that JD should have stepped up and asked to be sent home so he can get her taken care of and know that she is okay and everything can heal properly. After what happened tonight I don’t think I’ll be watching the show any more. I mainly watched it just to see Bill and Star.
bill n star goin home is huge. it just wont b the same. they r the reason we……………………………… MY IRISH JACK RUSSELL abbi , b gan 2 watch. bye……
I am totally appalled at the show tonight. Last week Bill was critized for “pushing” Star too hard and tonight, he was critized for Star not jumping. The judges claimed Star wasn’t listening to Bill; however, she was looking straight at him. She just wasn’t gonna jump. The jumping challenge was way too much. They can’t expect a dog to jump from that high after only having a few hours of training. I hope they’re happy - they now have an injured dog to show for their stupidity. I am really disappointed with the show and the judges after tonight. They took it beyond dangerous. These judges are supposed to be animal experts???? Give me a break - they’re in it for the TV time and to help sell their books. They don’t care about the dogs or the owners. AND…the elephant challenge….how many news bits have we seen about trained elephants going “crazy”. Luckily, this didn’t happen - but it was sure a recipe for disaster.

My DVR just stopped taping right after Teresa & Leroy. I had to come online to see who was voted off. Guess I will have to watch online when it is available. I am very sad to read Bill & Star went home. I thought they would have made it another couple of weeks at least.
It grieved me to see what you put those precious dogs through tonight. SHAME ON YOU!!! And now one of the dogs has been injured because of your stupidity. And, that these so-called judges you have went along with it, is even more disgusting. These judges are supposed to be dog-lovers, oh come on. Of course you can see the snoot (yes, snoot) dripping from their noses every week, especially the one that comes attached to the little white dog. Is that for real, or is it a stuffed dog? Again, SHAME ON YOU!!!!
I have been watching this show with my eight year old son. Wheh they announced Star was kicked off, he started crying!
Wow! I’m sad. I’ll miss him. But they left very graciously!
I am sure there will be NO trash talking at the house concerning his departure.
I thought this weeks show with the elephant and stunt dog tricks
were at the top of the list in cruelty. no person or animal should
have to face an elephant, especially a charging one. i admire the
dogs for staying as long as they did but this was ten times more
cruel than the rubber band around the mouth. also more cruel than
bill pushing his dog with the pups episode. where was the fantastic
bigmouth this time. she really didn’t think the elephant or stunts
were cruel for non stunt dogs. how cruel is to have a dog jump off
into the air? nobody should have been eliminated tonight other
than the jerk that thought this was showing courage. it was to me,
a test to see which dog was dumb enough to face a elephant or jump
into the air. bill and star should have been rewarded for being
smart enough not to jump. bill was told on the pup show not to press
star so much, which he did not do tonight. very unfair test for
courage. when i think of courage it is entirely different than your
way of thinking. very very very bad show. i am extremely displeased.
.Boxer pups are all over the place.Travis is doing an excellent job of keeping Presleys attention and that jump.He did not sort of step off he jumped into thin air against his nature ( boxers hold onto things with their front paws and walk on their hind legs for balance.I think Star was terrific but I think the maze showed she was slowing down alittle.Bill was right to take her up the slower hill.Look at Galaxy. That challenge was not the best for the dogs.Flailing around in the harnesses could not have been good for their legs and joints.
This week’s “Courage” challenges only proved which owners were most inclined to be cruel to their dogs and encourage them to participate in activities that were at best traumatizing and at worst injurious. Should a dog really be taught NOT to fear a charging elephant? Is that in the best interest of the dog–training it to disregard a life threatening situation? (An elephant is NOT a pet,it is a wild animal. It can never be relied on to not revert to instinctual behaviors when stressed.) Also the injury to Galaxy proved that the zip-line challenge was more than just frightening to the dogs, it was actually dangerous. I think the best dog owners were the ones that refused to make their dogs complete the course when the animals were clearly too afraid to do so. I’m very disappointed in the show for encouraging the owners to put their dogs in danger to win a contest. That is just wrong. I’m especially surprised that Judge Victoria Stilwell would be a party to this, as her training methods are extemely humane. This episode was a very poor example of proper treatment of dogs. (And elephants, for that matter.)
That was terrible having the dogs on the zip line and jump!!!!!!!!!!
i’m disappointed that bill and star went home. I so wanted them to win it all. Bill’s gentle way of training and his calm disposition make him so loved by so many fans. Star is still a great american dog, she is a sweet very well balanced dog and that’s due to Bill’s love and training. I was impressed that Andrew stayed, showing his complete trust in Laurie. We dont know what the dogs have been exposed to in the past but Leroy has obviously never seen a large animal before. I still want to see either Leroy or Jd & Galaxy win. It really sucked that Galaxy appears to have injured her shoulder in the jump. She was incredible the way she looked so much like she really loved doing that with her tail wagging and a big smile on her face. Jd is an excellent trainer and i have to say i do favor him for the win. I’m praying for Galaxy’s quick recovery.
What would you do if a giant of an unknown creature came walking or charging at you while making very loud noises? Run!! Any dog who got up out of the circle was SMART. As for Andrew, bless his heart, he was probably too scared to move. What were you people thinking with a stunt like that? As for Star, I’m sooooooooo sorry to see you go. You were GREAT! Best wishes to you Bill. As for Galaxy, my heart is breaking for you. I hope you are okay.
You need to bring Bill and Star back to the show. What you asked that older dog to do was not fair. The judges said Bill picked the easier ramp so they graded him on that, but a prior show they got on him for being to hard on the dog. How can they know what you want??? What was asked of any of the dogs to do on this weeks show was crazy and dangerous. You had one of them hurt. Dogs twist when they are hung from the air which is how the dog got hurt and I think the show knows it. Dogs have survival instinct and Bill and Star really got screwed on this weeks show. I still cannot believe the show put them all in danger with the elephant and the flying act. Ricki
Very disappointed that Bill and Star were sent home. The judges were so wrong. Last week Bill was criticized for making Star work too hard. This week they questioned why he chose the easier ramp. HELLO..Bill is older and he recognized that Star would have a hard time on the other ramp. Star was criticized because she would not jump as Victoria said “to safe Bill’s life” That woman is a joke as a judge. I thought that as good as JD and Galaxy are, the judges who always seem concerned about the treatment of the dogs should have sent them home when it was evident Galaxy was in pain. I don’t know if I can watch anymore without Bill and Star. They are the winners in my book
I was appalled with the courage show. Dogs were being put to the test of their courage by an elephant, outlandish!!! As for the zip line challenge, COME ON, dogs were not meant to fly and to test their courage on that level is crazy. Some are meant to jump into water but they understand that. For each dog that did not jump I applaud them. I am so sorry that Galaxy got injured. From what I have seen of the show and especially with last nights stunts I believe that this show is starting to take a turn to cruelty to animals! I definitely do not respect or admire the judges opinions or comments! It would be a sight to see if one of the dogs got angry enough and took a growl at one of them, now that would be a standing applause from me!
You should be ashamed of yourselves after that last show!!!
Standing in front of an charging elephant and jumping off a platform does not make a “great dog”!!
Again, another network program goes for sensationalism to get the ratings - probably at Galaxy’s expense.
I will not watch the remaining shows and hope that PETA comes knocking on your door soon!!
It was inhumane and the judges, who always speak out about the owners being too harsh with their dogs, so look at what they are promoting. (But then they would lose a paycheck.)
I hope you aren’t renewed next year.
yes i agree, Bill and Star are the winners in my book too.
i just adore Bill and Star and will miss them! He should still be on the show! and they NEED NEW JUDGES!! REAL ANIMAL EXPERTS! not these self proclaimed sitcom dummies!
that jump was way too high and the practice jump was what? 3 foot? the final jump should have only been 6 or 8 foot with the harness not 40 feet! my GOD! that was just plain dumb. that stupid judge with the doggie glued under her arm really gets on my nerves she is a complete moron. whoever came up with these stunts is obviously not a very intelligent person. Andrew was impressive that he stayed but other comments are right, what if that elephant did not stop when he was suppose to? and he crushed Andrew? that was very dangerous. Leroy was totally natural in his response, barking a warning, then running..borders are extremely intelligent dogs. Star is also very intelligent she got the hell out of there too!
Are these people out of their minds, elephants and zip lines, could they be any more cruel to dogs? I feel so bad for Bill and Star, he did what was best for his dog, and got punished for it. Whats the deal? Galaxy got injured during these stunts, its inexcuseable. These judges are world experts, I would not let them any where near my dogs. The show should apoligize to the dogs and owners and the people that watch the show. Dangerous and cruel, BOO to all that had anything to do with putting the bond between man and dog in danger. I will always remember the heart that Bill and Star have. Thats what is important in bonding. I pray that JD and Galaxy have a speedy recovery, it should not have happened. Take care of Galaxy, hope he recovers soon.
I was so disappointed in this weeks episode. Dangerous and ridiculous. One dog is now inured and what does that prove? The two smartest dogs there were the ones that would not jump. The “dog trainer” is not one of my favorite people anyway. I think there are better experts out there than the ones you have chosen. Maybe some who actually love animals and care more about their welfare than these do. Bill was the kindest person on the show (always helping others) and Star was the love of his life. Cudos for him refusing to push has dog further. Also, Andrew has a heart bigger than everyone around him. Of course he was stressed being up so high!!!!! He sure looked that elephant in the eye though. More courage than those judges would have had. Let’s see them out there.
I am Shocked!!!!! What the Hell are you Judges thinking? The smartest dogs in this episode was STAR AND ANDREW for NOT jumping… Look what you guys have done to Galaxy.. she is Hurt now.. are you happy now Judges? And what is up with not letting Leroy Bark? He is speaking to his master..God You Judges are so STUPID!!!!!! We will Miss Bill and Star,The most kindest sweetest man in the world….Of Course he is cause he is Texan…Bill if you read these blogs your the greatist and we will miss you and Star.. I Say all of the Dogs and Their owners are ok people. But Bill thought of Star first and formost..Come on Back to Texas Bill! we love you and Star honey
Jumping from 40 feet makes your dog the greatest? Or standing to a charging elephant?
This is absolute stupidity by the creators/producers of this show. They put these dogs in dangerous situations, and for what?! I guess they figured more people would be amazed than appalled.
As for the contestants, Bill & Star were great, but he was starting to lose it some. AND, it was entirely from these stupid stunts and challenges!
This show started out OK, but it quickly turned into a farce.
I am disappointed that Bill and Star was voted off the show! I was only watching the show because of them. Now that they are not on the show I will NOT be watching the show anymore!!
Shame on you for putting pets in front of danger and fear! And an injury? Unbelievably careless of producers.
For some reason my DVR didn’t record this episode and when I found out Bill and Star went home I cried! BILL AND STAR YOU ARE THE TRUE WINNERS IN MY EYES AND I’M SURE MILLIONS OF OTHERS FEEL THE SAME WAY! God must have known it was time for Bill and Star to go home to Bills wife Sherri who is a diabetic. Star is an unbelievably smart dog and I wish their family all the best!
God Bless Bill, Star and their family!
Dani
To anyone reading this—is there anywhere I can go to watch this episode???
Last night’s show was the most despicable display of animal cruelty I have ever seen. The show was great until last night, but whoever created the challenges for the Courage show is a sadist.
To ask any dog to stand still while a 9,000 lb. elephant is charging its owner is insane to say nothing of the incredible harm that could have come to any of the dogs or their owners.
I am also absolutely livid that Galaxy was harmed by the jump!!! That was insane. Star and Andrew deserve major league prizes for using their common sense. You could see how cruel last night’s show was in the faces of each and every dog. I think the show should be taken off the air immediately. And I think the contestants should all sue CBS for putting them in harm’s way!
I couldn’t agree more with the previous comments about the Courage episode. If my dog and I were on the show, I would have withdrawn. I feel both challenges were unfair to the dogs, who were expected to act contrary to their instincts. Dog training is based on trust and teamwork. I would never voilate my dog’s trust by asking her to do the things these dogs were asked to do.
I think Galaxy’s leg was injured doing the ramp. A dog her age should not be expected to do something that strenuous, especially without a warmup. JD did have the option of the easier ramp and he should have taken it. I think this is a good lesson for ALL competitive dog people. We tend to get blinders on and push our dogs too far for the sake of competition.
I could not believe the stupidity of the show last night. CBS should be ashamed to air such a program. After last night I am through watching the show. Bill and Star were the main reason I watched and with them gone I’m done. Star and Andrew were very smart not to jump. I can just picture some kid now putting his dog on the roof and asking it to jump. The elephant was also very stupid. I would turn and run if an elephant came charing at me. I can’t say anything nice about the judges so I will shut up now.
Danielle, I am going to tell you that you should be happy you missed the show. I am not a person that will sit down and watch a “reality show” or any show for that matter, but I did take an interest when I heard of the dog show. But I will not continue to watch this show any more, its a waste of time!
Does anybody involved in the production of the show read these comments?
I would appreciate a response.
The majority of these “challenges” require the dogs to do things that are not compatible with their breeds, or even their dog-ness.
The contestants of most reality shows opt to do things that may be dangerous, humiliating, or degrading. In this case, the dogs did not opt to be on this show.
The producers do need to explain the “reasons” that they are choosing bizarre challenges for the dogs, as well as to admit responsibility for these bad choices. Many children are watching this show and they deserve an apology.
By the way, my interest in the show is due to the fact that I own a border collie. Back some weeks, poor Leroy was asked to be angry. Border collies do not get angry. Were the judges asking that he be provoked. The band was a better choice.
And of course border collies bark. A judge that can’t tolerate that is down right silly.
Please, an explanation.
I am from Taiwan and watch the show every week. I am totally agreed with the above comments. Andrew and Star should have got the reward this week. They chosed to follow their intincts and decide not to jump. Especially Star, think about that if Bill’s wife is going to be sick caused by her diabetic but she doesn’t notice by herself, so she asks Star to go out of the house, and then Star refuses to leave. Would we say that”Star is not courage enough or Star isn’t listenning her owner or trusting her owner?” My god, Star is such a smart dog and so is Andrew. Everyone knows that how Andrew is attched to his owner but this time he decided not jump, his action are totally changing my mind, I don’t like Andrew that much before, but this time I adore him. I couldn’t image that a golden retriver helps a blind people run into a wall but not to walk around it just because it is asked to do so. My god, Star and Andrew should get the big rewards, being such smart dogs.
Last weeks episode totally disgusted me. Having the elephant charge while you have your back to it was extremely dangerous. Don’t these people read the news about elephants killing their trainers. All it would have taken is someone there looking like one of their ex trainers and bingo. Yes, elephants do have very long memories.
As for the “leap of faith” stunt, enough said. I certainly wouldn’t have done it and told them what they could do with their monies. Poor Andrew it must have looked like jumping into the Grand Canyon for him. I certainly hope Galaxy will be okay. It looked to me like a hip injury caused by the restraints he had on. I wonder if Miss Snooty would have done either one of these stunts with her little precious. (I think not).
It would be interesting to know if the SPCA is aware of this show. I am sure they would put a stop to it.
Good luck to you Bill and Star. If this is the way this show going, I think you are better off in good ole Texas.
I think that Lori and Andrew should have won. I’m human and I wouldn’t go under an elephant legs for all the money in the world. If Andrew had won the contest people would see small dogs are not just lap dogs. The separation anxiety you said Andrew have when he is away from his owner can be corrected with medication. My Pom had this problem but after a couple of weeks on medication she over came this problem. This was a sad night for all small dogs around the world.
To: Theresa & Leroy
I’m really sorry you guys didn’t win. Theresa, I
can’t believe the judges blamed you for putting the
rubber band on Leroy’s fangs! I wish you would have won!
I have a Bichon Frise named Happy, where do you should suggest I should take him to get groomed?
Write back please!
