Greatest American Dog Show

Awaiting Greatest American Dog…

Hi everyone…  I am launching this blog in anticipation of CBS’ Greatest American Dog, which premieres on Thursday, July 10 at 8pm (est/pst).  Finally a reality show that celebrates the amazing bond possible between human and animal!  Can’t wait to see the endearing antics and high drama that is bound to ensue.

The purpose of this blog is two-fold, for now at least.

PURPOSE 1: I will follow the show, keep folks updated on the latest developments, and reflect upon issues that the show brings to mind.  I invite you all to join in.  One rule - keep it respectful.  Consideration for your fellow blogger should be a given.  You know what I mean.

PURPOSE 2: Any show that makes claim to the title of Greatest American Dog begs to be challenged on the the following grounds… Who are these people to make such a broad proclamation when they have never met my dog?  While I am sure the show’s contestants are noteworthy to the extent that they were selected to appear on TV - whether cute, obedient, talented, entertaining, or all of the above - we all think that our own dog is actually the best.  I know I do!  So while Greatest American Dog begins to ponder the question, “what makes a dog great?”, this blog is meant to showcase the yet undiscovered talents we already know and love in our own homes.  In the process, we’ll further define the meaning of the title.  Who knows?  The producers of the show may even scout this site for Season 2!  Celebrity persuits aside, please take this opportunity to tell me and the world about your own Best Buddy.

Just a brief disclaimer before I start off with my first post… I am not officially associated with the show Greatest American Dog in any way (except that I plan to watch/write about the show, and the blog name/url is similar to the name of the show, though NOT the same).  I am just an individual who loves my dog, and I love meeting new people and their dogs.  Now let’s get started!

Here is my nomination for Greatest American Dog…

Meet Andy (otherwise lovingly known as Hound, Hound Dog, My Baby and Sharky McQueen), pictured above in his own tent with the American flag as a back drop (suggestive props, eh?).  He’s great because, if I had to pick just one reason, he gives the best “welcome home” ever.  OK, that ability might not be unique to Andy, but it certainly makes me feel special when I come home from a business trip or even just a quick visit to the grocery store.  As VISA says - priceless.

Andy is the most friendly, gregarious, and recognizable dog in town.  We live in a city neighborhood with shops, cafes, parks, even a dog beach, and we meet a lot of fellow dog companions when we are out and about.  Everyone knows Andy.  He’s got a distinctive face (his snout does not exactly line up, so one of his bottom canine teeth sticks outside his mouth - hence the name Sharky), yet this dog goes on greeting people and other dogs as if he’s running for President (or positioning himself for running mate).  Hey, Barack…

As a mutt with a mix of herding and terrier behaviors, at just 1-1/2 years old, Andy already displays natural leadership skills (he’s some kind of healer apparently) yet doesn’t mind getting his paws dirty (loves to dig!).  Resume and references available upon request (just kidding, kind of).

He also can be amazingly patient, like he has been for the past few hours while I’ve been ramping up this blog.  As if waiting by the door is not an obvious enough signal, the puppy-dog eyes are starting to take effect.  We’ll be heading out shortly, so that’s it for the first post.  I’ll be back on tomorrow to add some thoughts before the show.  In the meantime, I am looking forward to meeting some fellow dog lovers.

This was the worst program I’ve ever watched. The preemtive ads made it seem like a dog lover’s best bet. It turned out to be a crock!

I watched the first episode this evening and liked it. Sorry, but I am rooting for Ron and Tillman. It’s cool that his dog Tillman can skateboard. What did you think about the show?

WELL JIM, I THINK RON AND TILLMAN HAVE A GREAT RELATIONSHIP!! THATS THE BEST PART OF THE SHOW, WATCHING THE PAIRS TO SEE HOW CLOSE THEY REALLY ARE.

I am VERY disappointed. I thought Tillman was given a raw deal. He should NOT have been voted off already. I don’t care for bull dogs but Tillman won my heart. He was adorable. Let’s bring Tillman back. Can we have a write in vote and get Tillman back??? LOL

I’m hoping that Travis and Presley will win. Mostly because I’m a big Boxer fan. Although I’M disappointed that Ron and Tillman got voted off.

I think my dog is great because he knows when people are sad. He has this way of lifting my spirits when I am down. He always comes over to me pushing my hand with his snout to make me pet him and usually that makes me forget what it was I was crying or sad about. His keen senses are just what I need in my life. I sometimes feel very sad when I think how one day we will part because his life is way shorter than mine if I live to ripen, old age. I just pray that I never take his love for granted.

    Paula,

I feel the same way about my dog Bocci, he has always been there for me and has been my best friend for over 13 years. He has not been well lately and he has been on cushings medicine. I know my time with him is limited and I thank God that he is with me each and every day.

Go Travis and Presley. Anybody from Perry, Oklahoma has got to be the best. Perry isn’t far from Stillwater and I am a great fan of the show. My dog, Murphy Brown, a Miniature Schnauzer loves watching the dogs and will bark and run up to the TV and jump up on his hind legs. He was rescued from the Stillwater Animal Control shelter about 12 years ago. He had been in there for a month and was getting ready to be put down. He was rescued by us and has been a great dog ever since. We are rooting for Travis and Presley being great Oklahoma residents!

I love Bill and Star, but I think JD & Galaxie will win. I also think the judges are a bunch of bullies. These people & ther dogs are just average Joes, I mean isn’t that what this show is about. They look down on all the participants like they are not good enough to be in this competition. They sit in their Judge chairs as if they are better than everyone else and they interupt the contestants so they cannot finish what they are saying.

I hope Bill and Star win. I feel that Star deserves to win b/c after all he IS a hero-He saved Bills wife when she was in a diabetic coma.

I hope that Bill and Star win. I think he is the kindest and most gentle dog owner I have ever seen and Star adores him. I think Ron and Tillman got a raw deal just because his picture wasn’t what the judges thought was good. I thought it was cute. I am so glad to see Beth Joy gone. She is so annoying. I am also appauled that they used bacon in one of the challenges. Bacon can be deadly to a small or older dog. It causes pancreatitis and almost killed my little Pomeranian “Sienna”. Had we not taken her to the vet she would have died because pork has a lot of hidden fat and should never be given to any dog.

This show needs to be stop before another dog gets hurt. Thats two dogs now. Wed 27 showed this is not love for your dog but the love of money..stop this now.. If people want to eat bugs and beat themselves up let it happen. This show has gone to far..

As long as the dogs are treated kindly and are having fun with their owners, I’m o.k. with most of the competitions on The Greatest American Dog; however, I cannot BELIEVE that the judges (who have accurately corrected the contestants who have pushed their dog too far) allowed the dogs to be charged by an elephant. How is that humane? Shouldn’t smart dogs retreat in that situation? Shame on the producers for allowing this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope this is read by next season’s decision makers.
