Greatest American Dog - Week 4 Personality

(Oops I messed up I forgot about the day change. the show has now been moved to Wednesday. Sorry for the late posting.)

This was an interesting week. I found the new sexual tension to be amusing and it added a little edge to the show. The Take It or Leave It challenge was great. I was surprised how quickly the teams were eliminated. I would have thought that the owners would have been better at predicting their dogs likes and curiosities. Results: JD & Galaxy go to the Dog Bone Suite then JD sends Travis and Presley to the Dog House. You can just feel the testosterone battle growing here.

The photo shoot was a very tough contest. It was random in the selection of the word and this randomness, some words were easy some were tough must have made it very difficult for the teams. Best in Show went to JD & Galaxy (this was their week to shine). The Judges probably picked the three worst performers for the final selection but even the judges had very mixed reviews about the pictures. One loved it and one hated it. One thought that a picture was too common while another thought it captured the word perfectly. I need a little more black and white structure to be comfortable with this stuff. Maybe that’s why they was using the shades of grey type challenges.

Worst Three: Ron & Tillman; Theresa & Leroy; Brandy & Beacon. I personally did not think that the snarl bands were unfair or cruel. I thought that they were appropriate. It is getting tougher each week to select bad teams. Unfortunately Ron & Tillman got sent home. I would have like to have seen more from them but they delivered the worst results and as a result they are out.

Greatest American Dog - Week 3 Team Work

In my opinion the show continues to improve. I liked both tricks again this week and the personality of the contestants continues to grow on me. The Dog House has now become an interesting source of conflict and while I did not like it at first it has grown on me.

I am a little disappointed by the editing of the show. While we heard a lot about the conflict between Elvis and the other dogs we really have not been shown any of the controversy except for the one battle between Tillman and Elvis. If there was so much conflict why wasn’t it captured on film?

I thought the judges were spot on when they called Lori on her attacks on David and Elvis. Even though this week was called Team Work, and Lori back stabbed one of her teammates, they gave her a pass. I probably would have sent her and Andrew home rather than David and Elvis. I think that the personality brought to the show by David and Elvis will be missed.

Greatest American Dog Show Two - Obedience

I like the new opening to the show. I like the drama of the Tillman-Elvis battle. The increase in conflict between the people also increased my interest in the show. I also liked this week’s dog bone challenge as it reflected the talents of the dogs and the skills of the owners. I even liked the dog related commercials that were on this week.

The three worst this week were good selections again this week. I thought that the expulsion of Alon & Kenji was also on target. I was concerned about the show after the first episode but I’m back to being a fan. I’m looking forward to week 3. Let’s see if I’m still a fan then.

One complaint that I have, or maybe it’s just a suggestion: I’d like to see the show include training tips to help us all learn how to better train our dogs.

After REwatching Greatest American Dog…

It all happened so fast - hard to process all of my reactions to this show! So I had to watch it again (available on the CBS website: View Here for all of you who couldn’t get enough).

First of all, we are now getting to understand that all of the dogs on the show are awesome - it’s the people that are really competing. As one judge said (I paraphrase here): the owner sets the tone and controls the dynamics of the interaction. Couldn’t agree more!

Just a note for all of you fellow mutt-nuts out there, I use the term “owner” as a substitute for the more preferred term “companion” because that is the reference used on the show. If you don’t get the difference, you need to read about a law that recently passed in Boulder, CO. View Article Owner versus Companion.

After my 2nd viewing of the show, I thought the small group performance was a perfect way to test the animal-owner relationship in action. You could tell immediately which contestants have a true bond and which ones force their own egos upon their poor pets, regardless of how lame the tasks were. I still think all of the weak links in this regard were correctly ID’d (sorry Brandy, Michael & Beth Joy), but I have reconsidered my thoughts on the team that was ousted.

Favorite judge comment: “The show is called Great American Dog, not Great American Michael.” Not to pick on Michael, but every other word out of your mouth was “Sush!”  How can you be interacting if you don’t allow your animal to speak?  Communication is a 2-way street.  Another on-target judge comment (again, paraphrased): If your dog is “cowering” in the presence of your inflated persona, you might want to release all that hot air.  Michael, I’m sure your relationship with Ezzie is “amazing” to you… Perhaps you have reformed since the taping of the show. If so, we’d love to hear from you.  Now that I’ve slept on the matter, Michael & Ezzie were the right ones to go.

Also uncomfortable to watch was Brandy.  I am not sure what I make of her at this point except, are you kidding?  Brandy, if Beacon refuses to fulfill your slighted request, perhaps there’s not enough of a reward in it for him.  I can imagine Beacon thinking, “If I wag for this cheer, I might get praise, but I’ll still have to put on that dorky plaid vest later.”  I thought about writing something like: maybe Brandy should go into fashion design, but that is what she already does, so this is way beyond a Barbie & Ken dress-up fantasy.  My more thoughtful suggestion to Brandy would be to look up the history of the Miniature Schnauzer breed.  These dogs were originally created to hunt and track rats and other vermin.  If Brandy could accept and find an outlet for this aspect of Beacon’s inherent personality, then he might be willing to model a few outfits now and then - and wag upon command.  Love Travis’ comment upon meeting Brandy and Beacon: “Tell your Mommy to take those shoes off you right now!”  I think Beacon has been trying to say that for years - only no one is listening.

I have to make a confession for the benefit of Brandy.  I have dressed up my own dog.  Last Halloween, I made Andy a shark costume, which was later destroyed while he played with other dogs BEFORE the judges arrived to award a $500 prize.  And most recently I actually sewed him an Army uniform in support of a friend going into officer training school, a photo of which will be included in the 1st care package.  But I also find off-leash opportunities for him to herd other animlas, roll in the mud, chase squirrels and rabbits, and dig (where appropriate).

OK then.  I have much more sympathy at this point for Beth Joy and Bella Starlett than I had before.  Under stress, stick with what you know, and that’s exactly what Bella (for short) did.  I don’t have a problem with that.  Unique as you are Beth Joy, keep it up.

Although we’ve seen only 1 episode, personalities of the contestants have begun to reveal themselves.  Some of the people/dog teams I would enjoy meeting at the dog park are:

JD & Galaxy - Someone is having fun in there.  I think I saw JD perform at an NBA half-time show.  If that was you, you and your dogs were more entertaining than the game I paid an outrageous amount of money to see (not mentioning teams).  What an obvious threat you are to the others.

Teresa & Elry - Who wants to go skinny dipping?  Elroy knows how to start a party.  Fun dog.  People tend to pick pets just like themselves, so Teresa is interesting by association.

Travis & Presley - Another pool party attendee.  Travis has a nice down-home personality (and is easy on the eyes for the ladies in the audience).  Coming in with the least amount of training, they are not over-confident like some of the others, which is an advantage.

Ron & Tillman - You’re so laid back, Ron.  You’d be fun to hang out with for sure. Tillman’s skateboarding talent - apparently picked up merely as a form of immitation - is amazing and entertaining.  Is Tillman a 1-trick pony though?

Bill & Star - I just like you, Bill.  Was that a painted-on mohawk?

David & Elvis - Don’t know what it is about these two, but I think they are going to win.

Laura & Preston - Laura is down to earth and according to me the epitome of a person connected to her animal.  These two might win if I had to hedge on my original prediction above.  She has already distracted Ron (probably not a difficult thing to do) with her beauty and style.

As for the others, Elan & Kenji (fabulous disco dancers) and Laurie & Andrew (thank you, this means so much tears - I’ve got to know more about what is going on with that!), I didn’t see enough of you to get a good introduction.  Hope next week’s show highlights both of these solidly performing teams more.

Moral of the episode?  The bond that results in obedience and the enjoyment that comes with it is based on mutual respect between person and dog.  The competition clearly demonstated that it can’t be a 1-way relationship.  As animal owners/companions, we must learn to observe and listen before we command.  Rather than blindly imposing our will, we must provide opportunities for our dogs to express themselves.  Then we can steer their natural inclinations in a desired direction.  (This probably works equally well with parenting.)

Andy is at doggie daycare today, but when he comes home, I’m going to sit quietly and hear what he has to say.

Greatest American Dog Shows Promise But Needs More…

I just watched the first episode of Greatest American Dog.  I love the concept and I like the pairs on the show.  However, I was very disappointed with the tasks assigned to the pairs.  They were lame and not very interesting.  Finally in the end I thought the judges voted off the wrong pair.

I thought the three worst pairs were good choices (Beth Joy & Bella Starlet; Brandy & Beacon; Michael & Ezzie).  Beth Joy & Bella Starlet were much poorer performers than Michael & Ezzie.  Beth Starlet the “actress dog” could not follow a single command.  I thought Michael & Ezzie should have been around for another week.

Awaiting Greatest American Dog…

Hi everyone…  I am launching this blog in anticipation of CBS’ Greatest American Dog, which premieres on Thursday, July 10 at 8pm (est/pst).  Finally a reality show that celebrates the amazing bond possible between human and animal!  Can’t wait to see the endearing antics and high drama that is bound to ensue.

The purpose of this blog is two-fold, for now at least.

PURPOSE 1: I will follow the show, keep folks updated on the latest developments, and reflect upon issues that the show brings to mind.  I invite you all to join in.  One rule - keep it respectful.  Consideration for your fellow blogger should be a given.  You know what I mean.

PURPOSE 2: Any show that makes claim to the title of Greatest American Dog begs to be challenged on the the following grounds… Who are these people to make such a broad proclamation when they have never met my dog?  While I am sure the show’s contestants are noteworthy to the extent that they were selected to appear on TV - whether cute, obedient, talented, entertaining, or all of the above - we all think that our own dog is actually the best.  I know I do!  So while Greatest American Dog begins to ponder the question, “what makes a dog great?”, this blog is meant to showcase the yet undiscovered talents we already know and love in our own homes.  In the process, we’ll further define the meaning of the title.  Who knows?  The producers of the show may even scout this site for Season 2!  Celebrity persuits aside, please take this opportunity to tell me and the world about your own Best Buddy.

Just a brief disclaimer before I start off with my first post… I am not officially associated with the show Greatest American Dog in any way (except that I plan to watch/write about the show, and the blog name/url is similar to the name of the show, though NOT the same).  I am just an individual who loves my dog, and I love meeting new people and their dogs.  Now let’s get started!

Here is my nomination for Greatest American Dog…

Meet Andy (otherwise lovingly known as Hound, Hound Dog, My Baby and Sharky McQueen), pictured above in his own tent with the American flag as a back drop (suggestive props, eh?).  He’s great because, if I had to pick just one reason, he gives the best “welcome home” ever.  OK, that ability might not be unique to Andy, but it certainly makes me feel special when I come home from a business trip or even just a quick visit to the grocery store.  As VISA says - priceless.

Andy is the most friendly, gregarious, and recognizable dog in town.  We live in a city neighborhood with shops, cafes, parks, even a dog beach, and we meet a lot of fellow dog companions when we are out and about.  Everyone knows Andy.  He’s got a distinctive face (his snout does not exactly line up, so one of his bottom canine teeth sticks outside his mouth - hence the name Sharky), yet this dog goes on greeting people and other dogs as if he’s running for President (or positioning himself for running mate).  Hey, Barack…

As a mutt with a mix of herding and terrier behaviors, at just 1-1/2 years old, Andy already displays natural leadership skills (he’s some kind of healer apparently) yet doesn’t mind getting his paws dirty (loves to dig!).  Resume and references available upon request (just kidding, kind of).

He also can be amazingly patient, like he has been for the past few hours while I’ve been ramping up this blog.  As if waiting by the door is not an obvious enough signal, the puppy-dog eyes are starting to take effect.  We’ll be heading out shortly, so that’s it for the first post.  I’ll be back on tomorrow to add some thoughts before the show.  In the meantime, I am looking forward to meeting some fellow dog lovers.
